Using a Coupon on a First Date Archive
I always treat on a first date, and not at some hole in the wall either. I'm also really into Groupon. But if I take a girl out to dinner, will I look cheap if I ask the server to apply my Groupon?Using a coupon on a first date is like asking for a doggy bagit ruins the atmosphere. Yes, in both cases you're demonstrating thrift and foresight, valuable qualities in a mate. But it's best to wait until the third or fourth date to show this side of you. A knack for fiscal planning is important, but it's not sexy. Unsurprisingly, Mark Kelly, coowner of Tree in New York, says daters are embarrassed about using coupons, whether from Groupon, BlackboardEats, Scoutmob, or another site. "Guys will come up to me [and ask me to apply a coupon discount]. They say, 'I do not want you to bring the check to the table; I do not want to see it again.' And I'm like, 'I won't blow your cover.'" So yes, if your date doesn't know you well and you use a coupon, he or she may well think that you are cheap. As Patti Feinstein, a dating coach, says: "It's a bad sign, like being rude to the waiter or undertipping.".
There is a bit more to the piece, but I saw this and thought that I hadn't seen the coupon controversy discussed in awhile, so I thought I'd toss this out there.
As to myself, I'm in favor of coupon usage in general, even a first date. And especially if it's for Red Lobster.
Actually, my husband did pull out a coupon on our first date. We were in grad school so neither of us had much money back then. We weren't near strangers though. We'd been flirting in class for a couple of months.
We laugh about it now sometimes when we are out on date night, nike free run.
Goes to show that if a girl is really into you she will ignore all kinds of lessthansmooth behaviour.
But please people remember to tip your server on the original total of the bill :)

Where I live the papers are full of coupons each week and the Sunday Paper advertises that there are $200 dollars worth of coupons in each Sunday Paper. (and enticement to sign up for the $30 a month fee to get the daily paper) I see loads of people using the coupons at the fast food places, and at the Post Offices digging through the paper bins (trash cans) for coupons. Then this area isn't as affluent as much of the other areas of the country. There are coupon clipping clubs at the Churches etc and the older ladies have these accordian files that fit into the grocery shopping carts where a child would sit. Then use the coupons without them knowing it. I can't see if making a difference in the taste of the food.
I also see people buying these cards for X amount of dollars to certain places like Appleby's , iHop, and the like where if you buy a certain amount they automatically credit a bonus amount with it. That's no different than a coupon really.
And if a guy pays with the card the date shouldn't know if it's one of those gift cards or a Visa Card. What should it really matter.
for a first date. But again it would depend on the couple and how much in sync they are regarding finances.
