O'Connor shifts to five
James O'Connor's chances of being the Wallabies' playmaker against the British and Irish Lions have been boosted by a switch to fiveeighth for the Melbourne Rebels.
After several weeks of calls for the move, Rebels coach Damien Hill switched O'Connor from fullback to fiveeighth for Saturday's Super Rugby home clash with the Southern Kings.
It meant relegating youngster Angus Roberts to the bench after he'd played in the No.10 shirt since Wallabies incumbent Kurtley Beale was injured then suspended indefinitely to deal with personal issues.
In the only other change to the starting team following last weekend's 3023 bonus point victory over the Western Force in Perth, Cooper Vuna returns to the wing after coming back via the bench from his onematch suspension for his bustup with Beale.
Lachlan Mitchell returns from injury to the bench, but the Rebels resisted rushing back skipper Gareth Delve from injury, with a bye following Saturday night's match.
"It was a solid performance in Perth and we feel we have a very balanced side with James at 10 this weekend," said Hill.
"Angus is continuing to develop at this club as are (fellow young bench players) Jordy Reid and Nic Stirzaker, hollister femmes."
Hill was justifiably wary of competition newcomers the Kings following their upset win over the Brumbies at the weekend.
"This is a very spirited Southern Kings outfit with a great leader in Andries Strauss, we know what they are capable of," said Hill.
"Many people close to the Kings would not have seen last week's result against the Brumbies as a surprise."
Melbourne Rebels: Richard Kingi, Jason Woodward, Mitch Inman, Rory Sidey, Cooper Vuna, James O'Connor, Nick Phipps, Scott Higginbotham (capt), Scott Fugistaller, Luke Jones, Caderyn Neville, Hugh Pyle, Paul AloEmile, Ged Robinson, Nic Henderson. Res: Shota Horie, Laurie Weeks, Jordy Reid, Jarrod Saffy, Nic Stirzaker, Lachlan Mitchell, Angus Roberts.
