Cormier taking advantage of junior opportunity
PICTOU COUNTY Finishing second on the Weeks Major Midgets in scoring this season, Lane Cormier has been offered the opportunity to finish the MHL season with the Weeks Crushers.
In 34 regular season games with the Weeks Major Midgets he had 11 goals and 34 points, while he had four goals and six points in five playoff games as a 15yearold. Cormier joins teammates and Crushers territorial picks Cody Johnston are Mark Vokey in being welcomed to join the junior A squad.
"He's a guy we watched all year as an organization and recognize the importance of having local talent on our team," said Malone. "Cormier is a true up and comer and we respect the way he plays, wearing his heart on his sleeve with a physical brand of hockey. He proved to be one of the midgets go to guys at a young age."
"The (Weeks Major Midgets) staff did a great job in his development so far and I think he has a bright future in hockey."
Cormier said Malone asked him Monday if he wanted to join the team for practice and afterward was asked to finish the season with them by the coaching staff. He said the Crushers decision to ask three of the Major Midgets to join the team likely came from their strong finish to the season.
"I think the effort toward the end of the year to help our team out really gave us a chance with them," he said. "For me I started putting the puck in the back of the net, which had a lot to do with it too. I wasn't taking as many games off towards the end of the year as I did early in the season because I was on and off really bad early in the year, just not consistent I guess."
The Hopewell native said that he isn't sure when or if he will be in the lineup for the Crushers, but hopes to see action in one or multiple remaining games for the Pictou County junior A team. Should he crack the lineup he said he will have to step up his game quickly.
"I think the biggest difference will be time with the puck because it's a quicker game with guys being bigger and stronger than in midget, hollister france," said Cormier. "It would be a great opportunity to play in a few games looking ahead to next season in midget because playing against bigger and stronger guys will help when I go back."
Malone couldn't confirm when or what major midget players could be making an appearance in the lineup in the remaining games in the regular season or into the playoffs.
